Qigong:
I just completed a 7-day training in Qigong with Master Mingtong Gu over Christmas… at Esalen of all places: so yeah, powerful work in a powerful place. There were moments of transcendence, deep connection and the kind of inner resonance I don’t often experience… all facilitated by a teacher who is more like a national treasure.
I was so impressed, I committed to Mingtong’s year long certification class, which starts January 31, 2016. You’ll be hearing more on this. Check it out yourself at chicenter.com
Quantum Touch:
Quantum-Touch is a method of natural healing that works with the energy of the body to promote optimal wellness. I discovered QT on a routine search of current energy healing methodologies. It’s kind of a hobby, but I like to sift the hype from more legitimate strategies to see what warrants further time… and this one did.
I took the level one and two certification course from Tyler, one of the trainers and have used this in combination with my own style to work through minor issues, especially headaches. I haven’t had a headache that doesn’t succumb to the techniques. So yeah, money well spent for someone with chronic headaches. Check it out: quantumtouch.com
Hypnotherapy:
I’ve been formally studying Hypnotherapy since 2001, but have been interested in working with deep levels of consciousness for as long as I can remember. There are a whole host of methodologies that can take you to that place, you just need to find the one that aligns with your sensibilities. For me, that’s Ericksonian Hypnotherapy.
I’ve taken advanced courses with Master Hypnotherapists (Brent B. Geary, PhD, Jeffrey K. Zeig, PhD and Eric Greenleaf, PhD) at the Erickson Foundations in AZ and CA. I’ve also studied extensively at other institutions, but there’s never been any comparison to Dr. Erickson’s brand of magic. Go for the best! Check it out: erickson-foundation.org
Kum Nye:
I’ve studied a wide variety of yogas since I was 18 years old, but Kum Nye has my heart. It’s slow, concentrated, deeply penetrating and works both the physical and psychological aspects of being in the most joyful way imaginable. If you’re ready to open your senses, deeply relax, revitalize and feel great all at the same time, this is for you. Tibetan Buddhism:
I’ve been an avid student of Tibetan Buddhism since the 80’s; reading everything I could get my hands on, listening to Pema tapes every night on end for months, doing compassion practices… the full gambit. But nothing prepared me for the intensity of the Four Month Human Development Retreat at the Nyingma Institute, which I undertook in 2010.
This retreat, designed by Tarthang Tulka offers comprehensive education in how to develop and expand the capacity to know, to increase awareness through the senses, and to find new, more radiant, ways of being in the world. Sounds enticing, but it’s difficult, demanding and will bring up all your stuff. But hey, you can take this in smaller doses; the Nyingma Institute offers a myriad of classes, retreats and workshops. I’ve taken many of them (mostly concentrating on the Buddhist Psychology Track) and highly recommend anything they do. Check it out: nyingmainstitute.com.
Diamond Approach:
Years ago, while reading Ken Wilber’s brilliant stuff, he recommended the Diamond Approach as a legitimate process for spiritual development. So true to my nature, I read everything A.H. Alamos wrote, took some workshops, studied with a teacher and really really tried to like it.
It’s not that I don’t resonate with the idea that the development of personal essence and the realization of full potential is paramount, but the complexity of this method left me flat. It’s more complicated than that, but this is a short review. Still, you should at least check it out and see if it resonates with you. It’s a method with a lot of offer. Here’s the link: ridhwan.org.
Integral Life Practice:
I’ve been reading, re-reading, intensively studying, contemplating and chewing through Ken Wilber’s ongoing work for years. It’s a never ending study that keeps going, because he keeps going.
Ken is a deep thinker, master synthesizer and clear communicator and the integral set of practices he has developed is a comprehensive fusion of the best practices from the world’s wisdom traditions.
Through the years I’ve taken a pretty representative sampling of workshops, classes and trainings in this model and it never gets old. I’ve just completed Ken’s new audio course: “Full Spectrum Mindfulness”; it’s complex, dense, well-organized, amazingly clear and well worth the money. Do yourself a favor, learn more about Ken and his offerings at integrallife.com
Unique Self:
Unique Self is Marc Gafni’s body of work and is essentially a evolutionary step in Ken Wilber’s developmental model. Together, Marc and Ken head the Center for Integral Wisdom; so Marc is not new to all this… just relatively new to me. That said, I’ve been blown away since I’ve discovered this stuff and it’s been non-stop since then.
I have fully and completely immersed myself in this work and it has changed my life like nothing I’ve ever experienced. This has been unexpected, difficult, heart-wrenching…. but very very welcomed. I’m currently studying with two amazing woman that Marc tasked with creating a comprehensive coaching model based on his theory. Please, please, please check it out: uniqueself.com. By the way, the website seems kind of unfinished in spots; I can excuse that, if you can.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ offset=”vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs”][us_image image=”2435″ size=”medium”][us_separator height=”1200px” size=”custom”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” columns_type=”boxes” height=”auto” disable_element=”yes” el_id=”soundvoicehealingwork”][vc_column width=”1/3″ offset=”vc_hidden-sm vc_hidden-xs”][us_image image=”2435″ size=”medium”][us_separator height=”1300px” size=”custom”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][ultimate_heading main_heading=”Sound – Voice Healing Work” alignment=”left” main_heading_font_size=”desktop:60px;” sub_heading_font_size=”desktop:30px;” sub_heading_margin=”margin-bottom:40px;”][/ultimate_heading][vc_column_text]
Silvia Nakkach:
I took Silvia’s Sound – Voice- Music Healing year-long certification course in 2009 at CIIS. I was so impressed with the her energy and passion, that I signed up without mulling anything over… which I normally do with that level of commitment. It’s still beyond me how I managed to trek into the city every week at rush hour.
Suffice it to say, Silvia is radiant energy, pure joy and a sublime artist; but beyond that, she is a divine alchemist who can change your consciousness with only 20 minutes of call and response. Do your mind, body and spirit a favor and take any workshop she offers. You can see for yourself what she’s up to at: voxmundiproject.com.
Pauline Oliveros:
Pauline is a powerful force in the world of contemporary music and has been dissolving the boundaries of what it means to listen for decades. Her influence has been profound on many levels and she has the achievement awards to prove it.
She is the founder of the “Deep Listening Institute” and describes the process as “a way of listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear no matter what you are doing”. This sort of passionate listening includes the sounds of daily life, of nature, of imagination, of one’s own thoughts as well to the act of listening itself.
I took a workshop with her at CIIS a few years ago and was profoundly shaken to the core. Her sonic mediations were pure bliss and her way of imparting the sheer joy of listening; unforgettable. Check her out at: deeplistening.org or paulineoliveros.us
Glen Velez:
The fact that Glen is a four time Grammy winner; founding father of the modern frame drum movement and legendary master percussionist and composer, hardly sums it up… he’s also an amazing human being; generous of spirit, patient, kind and lots of fun.
I took a weekend workshop with him several years ago and drummed for the first time in my life… along with learning some East Indian scat singing. It was a total blast. He teaches at CIIS every once in a while, so get on their mailing list or just check out his website at glenvelez.com
Pat Moffitt Cook:
It’s hard to find a woman more extraordinary than Pat Moffitt Cook. She’s a pioneer in the research of cross-cultural sound and music in healthcare, wellness and education. She certified in auditory stimulation and sensory integration methods including the Tomatis Method and the Listening Fitness Program (LiFT), as well as in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. Her books and CD’s on Music Healers of Indigenous cultures are mind-blowing.
In a nutshell, Pat is a wealth of experience and knowledge, which she imparts with such a gentle compassionate nature that you’ll never want to leave her class. I took a weekend workshop with her years ago that was so chock full of essence and beauty that it was simply unforgettable. To this day, many of the ancient mantras she taught, reverberate in my heart. Look her up at openearcenter.com and catch one of her classes at CIIS; you won’t be disappointed.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_placement=”middle” columns_type=”boxes” height=”auto” disable_element=”yes” el_id=”visionquestwork”][vc_column width=”2/3″][ultimate_heading main_heading=”Vision Quest Work” alignment=”left” main_heading_font_size=”desktop:60px;” sub_heading_font_size=”desktop:30px;” sub_heading_margin=”margin-bottom:40px;”][/ultimate_heading][vc_column_text]
Jean Houston:
Jean Houston, together with her late husband Robert Masters were the upstarts of the Human Potential Movement in the 60’s. Together they established the cutting edge Center for Mind Research and Jean has never looked back. She simply evolves into ever-loftier states of wisdom that grow and shape her myriad of offerings.
If you’ve never heard of her, she’s actually pretty famous in the world of change and transformation. She’s taught in over 100 countries, worked with Presidents, major corporations and the United Nations, besides being a prolific author, mentor and workshop leader. She has spearheaded a number of movements, the most recent being Social Artistry and she teaches a pretty amazing online course about Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose (which I happily took several years ago).
I’ve been reading her books, listening to her audios and doing her practices for years, but my most significant experience was being at a live workshop she facilitated at IONS in 2015. To say I was blown away would be an understatement. Jean is the real deal and one of the few wise elders the planet has to offer… so if you have a chance take a workshop or at the very least, read her books. Please check it all out at jeanhouston.org. and get yourself a piece of mythic magic.
Leslie Gray:
I took an intensive certification workshop with Dr. Leslie Gray on Shamanic Counseling in 2015 and have become even more intrigued with the integration of ancient wisdom and modern ideas of healing. Leslie brings a lifetime of wisdom from her extensive studies with tribal elders, medicine people and healers. She may actually be one of the few surviving bearers of this brand of knowledge, since many of the elders she’s studied with have past.
Her workshops are otherworldly, provocative and game changing; and, although the one I took was geared toward therapists, she offers others that may fit exactly what you’re looking for. Check out her site at woodfish.org
Alberto Villoldo:
Ok… I’ve never taken a workshop, but I’ve read Alberto’s books and think his Four Winds Society is more than noteworthy. Alberto is a psychologist, a medical anthropologist and a long-term student of Amazon and Andean shamanic practices, as well as being an accomplished practitioner and teacher of energy medicine.
Over the last 25 years he has trained thousands of students from all over the world and from all walks of life. In a nutshell, he helps people heal themselves and “dream a new world into being”. His site is well worth checking out at thefourwinds.com.
Robert Moss:
Robert Moss is a “Dream Teacher” and a storyteller who “helps people find and live their bigger and braver stories and tell them really well”. He is the creator of “Active Dreaming”; a synthesis of modern dreamwork and ancient shamanism, which he has taught all over the world. He describes his process as a journeying method that allows you to be fully of this world while maintaining constant contact with “the world-behind-the-world,” where the deeper logic and purpose of your life is found.
I discovered Robert through an offering from the Shift Network and after listening to the free webinar, I was captivated and completely charmed. I signed up for the full course 12-week course and never missed a session. Robert is so full of joy and so completely dedicated to the mystery of dreaming, that you can’t help but want to do the work and get there yourself. He is a gift that deserves to be discovered by anyone interested in more depth, more joy and more meaningful dreams. Check out his offerings at mossdreams.com
